sign of the times

by shahdevine » Sun Aug 02, 2009 11:33 am
if x-y>10, is x-y>x+y?

1) x=8
2)y=-20

OA is d

is there a way to add inequalities and figure this out faster.

I went with b because y is the unknown that's affected by sign changes, so since in statement 2 we know what the exact sign of y is, it is sufficient. But with statement one you have

8-y>10 --> is 8-y>8+y? doesn't this again depend on the sign y is? please advise. thx

Try breaking down the equation....It makes it easier.

x-y > x + y = -y > y

Substitute 8: x- y > 10

8 - y > 10

-2 > y
