Ready to be evaluated

by Fab_Vr6 » Sun Jul 08, 2007 11:42 am
Hi Stacy,

my background:

-Canadian working for the biggest bank in Canada as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), 5 years of working experiences. Also worked at the brokerage arm of the bank for 2 years within those 5. Host for the bank's high value chinese clients events twice. Top 4 performer out of 20 planners in my region.

-Finance undergrad GPA total 3.39 (but GPA were on the rise and reached 4.3 during the later part of my school life), Dean's Honor roll student twice.

-GMAT: 700

-Business director/social director for the biggest motorsport club in Canada. Responsible for developing sponsorship for the club, as well as expanding the club's motorsport's activities

-speak and write fluent english, cantonese, mandarin

-hobbies: Racing cars and go-karts

-born in Asia and moved to Canada when i was 15.

-Schools planning to apply: first choice--LBS, UCLA, MIT, Kellogg, Yale, NYU, Oxford

-Career goal: Working in Asia in IB

-for recommendation letter I am planning to use my previous manager at the bank, and the president of the motorsport club.

My questions:

1) Chances of getting into those schools?

2) The reason I can't use my current boss is because I have a 5 year commitment to the job when I took it, now has only been 2 years. I didn't want to use another work manager besides my ex-manager because I want to showcase my diversity with the motorsport club as I think it is something different.

Thanks!

Fab

My question is whether my selection of recommenders will be ok (without my current supervisor), and whether the schools view extracurriculum work like running a motorsport club as something interesting or not?

Hi Fab_Vr6,

I think your previous manager will be fine, though you will have to explain why you didn't use your current manager somewhere in the application. Generally in the "optional" essay.

For recommendations the adcomm really does want to see what you are like in a professional setting. It won't necessarily hurt you to use an extracurricular recommender, but it may be better to use someone else you know professionally. If you use the extracurricular person you should make sure that: A. you have discussed your accomplishments in this activity somewhere in your essays and B. This person can comment credibly on your management, leadership and interpersonal skills.

I think that recommenders from outside work are best as a third recommendation for schools that ask for 3.

Good luck!
