vacation

During a 10-week summer vacation, was the average (arithmetic mean) number of
books that Carolyn read per week greater than the average number of books that Jacob
read per week?
(1) Twice the average number of books that Carolyn read per week was greater
than 5 less than twice the average number of books that Jacob read per week.
(2) During the last 5 weeks of the vacation, Carolyn read a total of 3 books more
than Jacob.

IMO E.

Let, Avg # of books Carolyn read/week = C
Avg # of books Jacob read/week = J

Stmt 1: 2C > 2J -5 ==> 2C + 5 > 2J ==> C + 2.5 > J
From this we cannot say for sure that the avg # of books Carolyn read/week is greater than the avg # of books Jacob read/week. So, insufficient.

Stmt 2: During the last 5 weeks, Carolyn ready 3 more books than Jacob. This info is definitely not enough to answer because we do not know how many books per week they both read in the first 5 weeks.

Combining both the statements also does not help determine if Carolyn read more books/week.
