My answer: D

Suppliers are
1. growing
2. cutting

B,E does not keep with the above idiom.
C changes the meaning of the sentence. "natural growth rate" in the original sentence implies their growth on their own, without human intervention whereas "growing them naturally" could mean they are still farmed (someone is doing the "growing").

Finally, A is wrong because "rate" already has the degree of change with respect to time built-in so we need to use high/low as qualifiers. For example, one would say "high velocity" rather than "fast velocity". (velocity here being rate of change of distance with time).

@nervesofsteel
Parallelism has to be used as X, Y and Z
where X is growing,Y is cutting and Z is raising.

IMO D.

Reason:

A:their natural growth rate, cutting their feed allotment :referrent for their is not clear. It is not clear whether their refers to the fish or the suppliers.

B:their natural growth rate, their feed allotment cut:Violation of parallelism, growing and their feed allotment cut not parallel.

C:growing them naturally, cutting their feed allotment :we are comparing how fast suppliers are growing fish (unnaturally) and how fast the fish grow when left alone in nature (naturally). This choice incorrectly implies that suppliers can grow fish naturally.

D:they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment :CORRECT

E:they grow naturally, with their feed allotment cut:Violation of parallelism as in the case of option B above.

Cheers!!

I will go with D.

Here we are comparing - 'the rate at which suppliers are growing fish' Vs. 'the rate at which fish grow naturally'.

Also fish is plural (This justifies the use of 'they / their'

Last thing is parallelism between growing and cutting

To meet the rapidly rising market demand for fish and seafood, suppliers are growing fish as twice as
they grow naturally, cutting their feed allotment by nearly half and raising them on special diets.

Can someone explain why they and theirs refer to fish? What are the rules to identify what noun they or their refer to?

Thank you in advance[/b]

coz suppliers are performing the action and they are doing this on fish, also the statement is parallel in nature i.e. growing.....cutting......whose feed??
not the suppliers!!! but fish's feed..
