Hi All,

In the below question, the answer is "E". Can somebody please help me understand how this answer as a standalone sentence correct ? Don't we need "that" after money as we are narrowing down the type of money. Please tell what I am missing here ?

Pensions are now viewed as a deferred payment of salary, money a worker is compelled to put away to take care of one’s later years.

(A) a worker is compelled to put away to take care of one’s
(B) that a worker is compelled to put away to take care of oneself in
(C) a worker is compelled to put away to take care of oneself in
(D) workers are compelled to put away to take care of them in
(E) workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves in

I agree with you but which other would you prefer?

In GMAT you need to the best out of available choices.

In B we used that but what about oneself?

E is best choice available.

First 3 choices have oneself problem while D has away to take care of them in problem.

But why are we preferring to keep "B" with oneself error. Why the priority of "oneself" error lower then the "that" error ??

yes, that is correct.

But as QG mentions we need to have restrictive word "that" after a noun if we need to tell more about the noun.

So on that basis alone why should not we use a first filter "that" for vertical splitting?

i.e. kick out all the answers not containing "that". Basically over here in the sentence there are two problems going simultaneously.

1. Pronoun reference issue.(one/workers....Oneself/themselves)
2. "that" missing issue....

On what basis we should decide which error to be kept in the final answer. Does it comes down to coin toss between the two

in the sentence missing "that" is not any issue. the pronoun mismatch is the decider.

"that" is used as a restrictive modifier, for info about a specific noun.

in the given sentence, pensions are used in a general way..what exactly pensions in general are. it doesnt specify any particular pension of any particular worker.

if we want to identify a particular pension plan we might say: " the pension that you were supposed to receive has been witheld" (god forbid )

also, "that" is a must after "indicate, report, announced.. etc etc)

But over here in this sentence how money is modifying "Pensions"...why is it not modifying the "salary".....the noun just preceding it....both pension and salary are some form of payment of money....

Here sentence started with "pensions", so Workers and not the worker - themselves is the right pronoun

IMO " a worker " can refer to a particular worker...
