GMAT scores, after the app deadline?

by chaiken21044 » Fri Feb 27, 2009 4:01 pm
So, I took the GMAT this moring and scored far bellow I needed to, in order to get into the program I want, which is U. MD Smith

The final deadline for U. MD Smith is Marh 1st, which is two days from now. My applcation is complete, but I have yet to submit it.

I spoke to a rep at U. MD Smith, who told me that I have the option to indicate on the app that I intend to re-take the GMAT. She informed me that, if I chose to do so, my application would not be reviewed until the new scores were submitted. She also said that, in doing so, my applcation would still be considered as having met their March 1 deadline, assuming that everything else was in order, even if the new scores didn't arrive until weeks later.

But, my question is this: do I have a realistic chance of being accepted under these circumstaces, even if I do very well on the GMAT the next time I take it? When evaluating applicants, won't they favor someone who's scores were submitted by the March 1 deadline?

Dear chaiken21044,

Most schools care about you scoring well enough on the GMAT to demonstrate your ability to do the work (and that you won't bring down the average). So if the admissions office told you to go ahead and submit indicating you will be retaking the GMAT, then I would encourage you to do just that. Ideally, you want to note your next test date on your application so be sure to get your test date secured before you apply. Your situation is not uncommon--the timing issue has nothing to do with preference being given to other applicants over you, but more to do with the time lag in your application being evaluated. Thus it is highly likely folks will be admitted in the 3-4 weeks while waiting on your score---but better to apply with a higher score later.

Good luck,
Lisa
