46 scientists

by real2008 » Fri Jul 03, 2009 2:31 am
Scientists calculated that the asteroid, traveling at 46,000 miles an hour, is on an elliptical path that orbits the Sun once a year and regularly brings it back toward Earth.
(A) hour, is on an elliptical path that orbits the Sun once a year and regularly brings it
(B) hour, is orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path that regularly brings it
(C) hour, once a year orbits the Sun, regularly bringing it on an elliptical path
(D) hour and orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path, regularly bringing it
(E) hour, orbits the Sun on an elliptical path once a year and that regularly brings it

why not
E?
IMO B is the answer.

A is passive.

C changes meaning.

D is a fragment.

E the "that regularly" is wordy and incorrect.

Says path that orbits = wrong.

(B) hour, is orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path that regularly brings it
Correct.

(C) hour, once a year orbits the Sun, regularly bringing it on an elliptical path
Changes the meaning.

(D) hour and orbiting the Sun once a year on an elliptical path, regularly bringing it
No definite verb. Incomplete sentence.

(E) hour, orbits the Sun on an elliptical path once a year and that regularly brings it
"that regularly"...here we need to have something like "that X" to create that parallelism.

B

a] Suggests that the elliptical path orbits the sun.. incorrect meaning

b] Correct meaning. "is orbiting" is correctly used as the asteroid is still orbiting..

c] Pronoun error. "it" refers to? Sun or asteroid?

d] Conjunction is not required here. Usage of "and" is incorrect.

e] Incorrectly suggests that asteroid orbits the sun on an elliptical path once a year.. and there might be other paths on which it does orbit the sun in the same year..

Can you please tell why the same is not the case with B too ?

Because of the use of "that".. the relative pronoun functioning as a subject for the object "it" (asteroid)

that refers to orbiting around the sun in an elliptical path..

Sorry, I don't think that I am able to understand what you meant here.

Can you please explain the same in a bit more detail by giving some simple example.
