SC Grail 700+ question

by powerpuff » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:28 am
Folks, try this question out! I had a hard time figuring out the answer but got it correct finally.Took an unreasonable amount of time though .Bad .Grrr

The Chinese suan pan is different than the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads on each in the bottom, representing the digits 0 through 4.

A. The Chinese suan pan is different than the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads on each in the bottom, representing the digits 0 through 4.

B. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus because the board is split into two decks, having two beads for each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 and 4, on each in the bottom.

C. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 through 4, each in the bottom.

D. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 through 4, on each in the bottom.

E. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus due to the fact that the board has been split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, which are representative of the digits 0 through 4,on each in the bottom.

Am loving these SC grail question
thanks powerpuff for posting another one :)

The Chinese suan pan is different than the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads on each in the bottom, representing the digits 0 through 4.

A. The Chinese suan pan is different than the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads on each in the bottom, representing the digits 0 through 4.

different than-------Incorrect idiom

B. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus because the board is split into two decks, having two beads for each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 and 4, on each in the bottom.

two decks, having two beads......changes the meaning of the sentence

C. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 through 4, each in the bottom.

on each....each-----Parallelism is not maintained

I am really confused between D & E.
the board is split vs the board has been split...the board has been spit sounds better
But I think E is wordy..(which are representative of)
I will choose D over E

Is the Answer D ?

This question is revolving around the difference in between the 2 abacus'.

The statement correctly uses IN THAT differentiating the 2 abacus' in terms of beads. So IN THAT shall be used to demarcate the difference.

WHY D now.

Because if u find the parallelism. [with two beads][ on each rod in the upper deck] and[ five beads], representing the digits 0 through 4(modifies correctly the 5 beads), [on each in the bottom]. these brackets are perfectly parallel in terms of the sequence of parts nouns followed by placement of objects ..in both parts around AND.

In C ...the Omission of [ON] each in the bottom makes it non parallel.

In A ...the modifier(representing the digits 0 through 4. ) seems to modify ambiguously both the abacus' hence we eliminate that

In B E...due to the fact and usage of Because is incorrect form of differentiators used to distinguished both the abacus'

Hence D

A is wrong because of the use of 'different than' which should have been 'different from'

B is wrong because of the use of 'because' and 'having'. We do not need to use 'because' as we are talking about how the chinese suan pan and abacus differ, not why they differ.

E is wrong because is a wordy with 'due to the fact that', and secondly, it makes use of the present perfect 'has been', which in the question is not necessary.

Between C and D, C loses out on parallelism and D gets it right, and hence, D should be the answer according to me.

Nice question.

PS Can anyone share the sc grail with me, if you have the soft copy. I think I need it bad, some wonderful questions it has

A. The Chinese suan pan is different than the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads on each in the bottom, representing the digits 0 through 4.

Incorrect Idiom different than"

B. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus because the board is split into two decks, having two beads for each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 and 4, on each in the bottom.

Incorrect : use of because changes meaning to cause & effect scenario

C. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 through 4, each in the bottom.

Incorrect : On is missing from "each in the bottom" phrase

Incorrect : "representative of" changes the meaning that "two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads are representative of the digits 0 through 4". The original meaning was they "represents the digits 0 through 4"

IMO - D , OA plz.
Good que though.

Abhishek

I must admit I improved alot during last couple of months and forum (Good post & experts ) is one of the tool helped me. Still long way to go in RC.
BTW thanks for all your good words.

Thanks Powerpuff !! I m not that enlightened with the jargon of English grammar but in my opinion you dont have to be all well versed with biggies like ellipses ,appositives etc etc...i guess the deal always lies in the pattern of some basic rules :)

And somehow I m loving SC grail...do u have CR grail too?? Or for quant in similar matter?

I would also go with D because of parallelism..............I was confused bw C & D but chose D because in C "on each rod in the top" is not parallel with "each in the bottom"...........wats the OA

Hi all,

A. The Chinese suan pan is different than the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads on each in the bottom, representing the digits 0 through 4.
different than: (Non Idiomatic)

The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus because the board is split into two decks, having two beads for each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 and 4, on each in the bottom. (Non Parallel)

C. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 through 4, each in the bottom.
(Non Parallel)

D. The Chinese suan pan differs from the European abacus in that the board is split into two decks, with two beads on each rod in the upper deck and five beads, representing the digits 0 through 4, on each in the bottom.

(No use for the Perfect tense over here, when u can say in Simple tense. Awkward)

Ans would be D.
