how much does A have?

A has $18 more than what B & C together would have had if both B and C had 1/4 of what A has. How much does A have?

(A) 20

(B) 48

(C) 32

(D) 36

(E) 40

I solved this by working backwards and plugging in the answer choices to make the equation work. If B & C BOTH have a quarter of what A has, find those values first. Then, we know that (B + C) + 18= A.
So, if we choose D)36...
1/4 of 36 = 9
(9 + 9) + 18= 36 which is what we were looking for.

So, I'd say the answer is D. OA?

If B & C have 1/4 A then

B = 1/4A
C = 1/4A

1/4A + 1/4A + 18 = A
1/2A + 18 = A
18 = 1/2A
A = 36

don't really like the wording of the question.

I tried B + C = 1/4A first

then tried

B = 1/4A
C = 1/4A

Came up with 36

I tried like this:
A = B+C+18
B = A/4
C = A/4
So, A = A/4 + A/4 + 18
= A/2 + 18
2A = A + 36
which is A = 36
