Use of "IT"

by AIM GMAT » Mon May 02, 2011 10:56 pm
IT

There are three common uses of the pronoun "it":

As an idiom
"It is snowing";

To postpone the subject
"It is untrue that a rhinoceros can run faster than my tights"; and

As a personal pronoun
"I wanted a rhinoceros for my birthday, but did not get it."

You may use all of these in academic writing, but to avoid awkwardness, you should not use more than one within a single sentence:
[WRONG] When it is my birthday, I hope to receive a rhinoceros, and I will walk it often.
It would be better to eliminate the first (idiomatic) "it":
On my birthday, I hope to receive a rhinoceros, and I will walk it often.

Sure, in OG 12, please look at Q 3 ('it was not until 1900') and 57 ('it can hardly be said that educators are at fault'). There are few others as well.

p.s. The example that you have quoted actually does 'not' use 'it' as a 'placeholder'.

Though most people take it for granted now, the nationwide admission of students to colleges and universities based on academic merit -------- what does most people take it for granted???? not clear because the second part is a explanation for admission

Though it is now taken for granted by most people, the admission of nationwide students to colleges and universities based on academic merit

Now taken for granted by most people, colleges and universities admitting students based on their academic merit ------> wrong modifier

Most take them for granted now, but the admission of nationwide students to colleges and universities based on their academic merit

Most people now take for granted that colleges and universities admit students nationally based on academic merit, and it

I thought the "it" was referring to "nationwide admission" and therefore the original sentence was correct.

Am i missing something here? Please explain.

Thank you

Hi HSPA,

hmm I agree that E is a little awkward but in A and B I was not able to understand the first part before comma :-( as still I don't feel the first part in A and B is correct because the second part after comma is giving the reasoning.........
