Usage of " thereby"

by mgmt_gmat » Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:27 am
Unlike the original National Museum of Science and Technology in Italy, where the models are encased in glass or operated only by staff members, the Virtual Leonardo Project, an online version of the museum, encourages visitors to "touch" each exhibit, which thereby activates the animated functions of the piece.
A. exhibit, which thereby activates
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of
C. exhibit, and it will activate
D. exhibit and thereby activate
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates

A. exhibit, which thereby activates - what does which refer to out here ? project , touch , exhibit ?? ELIMINATE

B. exhibit, in turn an activation of - activation- noun form not required here . ELIMINATE

C. exhibit, and it will activate - what will ? the touch ? the project? ELIMINATE

D. exhibit and thereby activate - CORRECT.

E. exhibit which, as a result, activates - wordy + what does which refer to out here ? project , touch , exhibit ?? ELIMINATE

I think D is correct.

For E... 'which' is introduces a non-essential clause and is more likely than not preceded by a comma. so E is incorrect.

OA is actually D.

However, I am not sure why A is wrong.
I understand "which" has to refer to the noun it modifies.
Isn't "exhibit" noun?
The way I interpreted is, "visitors touch each exhibit and the exhibit activates the animation (perhaps exhibit was set up touch sensitive).

Experts, help please!

Thanks

A. exhibit, which thereby activates ---- which wrongly refers to exhibit
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of ----- awkward
C. exhibit, and it will activate ---- changes the intended meaning by saying that exhibit will activate animated functions of the pieces
D. exhibit and thereby activate ------ proper result is shown i.e visitors can activate the animated functions of the piece
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates ----- unnecessary fragmentation

activate verb is being used for plural noun visitors

the meaning of the sentence is that the visitors activate the features by touching the exhibit.

also, the presence of "the piece" later in that clause implies that the piece (= the exhibit) is not the subject of the clause.
