GMAT 700, Indian IT Pool. Should I retake?

by vineeshp » Fri Feb 12, 2010 7:38 pm
Hi,

I gave the GMAT last Tuesday and got 700 (Quant 49, Verbal 38) on the GMAT. The way the test was going, I was felt good and expected to see a score of around 740. I was kinda surprised when I ended up with 700. I found the test to be easier than any other practice I had taken.

I am looking at the August 2011 batches mostly though I will give my luck a try for some of the universities that start their batches in Spring 2011 too.

My profile.

Profession: IT engineer, 5 years 3 months experience,
GMAT: 700
College Degree: Engineer, Computer Science, First Class.
NO International experience.

Should I retake the GMAT? Unfortunately, I am not sure where have I gone wrong in the GMAT. So If I have to prepare more, I dont know where to give attention to. But I think Sentence Correction is one definite Area.

With this kind of a profile, do you think it is worth giving the GMAT again? I am looking to enter one of the top 30-40 schools.

Also, if I have to retake the GMAT, I am unsure what more material to get. I completed the official guides and Kaplan practice during my prep stages.

Please advice.
Thanks!

Hey Vineesh,
I'm not admission expert but I'll tell you whatever bits and pieces I know.

Firstly 700 is really a nice score congrats for hitting that illusive 7 mark , you are better off without re-taking subject to your overall application, essays, extra-curricular activities and grad scores.

Have you decided which schools you are aiming for? 700 is decent score to forget GMAT and start working on application process in my view.

Thanks

Hey linkinpark,

Thanks for your reply..

I was hoping to make my school choice based on the strength my GMAT score gives. But then the score took me to a confusing state. My resume is otherwise not that strong enough considering the IT pool from India is large and I got nothing special or unique to show. In terms of extra-curricular, I got nothing much to show either. :(

I understand that essays can sometimes make or break a resume, but again, because they are subjective, what I think great might not be considered worthwhile by the admissions committee.

Any other replies too are welcome.
