IMO E

Interest generated and invested are both in past, but generated has to be after investment, so it has to be had been invested.

Isn't "was" in the if part wrong? Also if we have was then there is no way to tell that investment happened before the returned interest.

I has to be 'was'...
2 reasons..look at the word before portion...A portion...when it is A portion, it has to be 'was' and not were..and in general, portion is treated as singular..

But in subjunctive mood,no matter what the subject is , a plural verb - were is used .

For eg : If I were a king , I would have ruled the country.

Il go with C . Whats the OA ?

Answer is C. Use of subjunctive mood is in play in this sentence. If....were. It doesn't follow any grammar rule
