Expert replies

Answer is D because-

If you see then invested is past tense & would be generated represents future action which has been talked in the more past I.e at the time of invested.......

Also, when if statement is being used not hypothetically then we have to use was as the verb

I hope I am clear !!!!

IMO: C

the interest income would be generated if a portion of the capital was invested
this is unlikely case in the future. that is, art museum will not use from interest of its income even invested in another form.. this never happens..

My answer is C. "were" should be used, since it is a hypothetical case. Please provide OA.

Thanks

(A) be generated if a portion of the capital would have been
(B) have been generated if a portion of the capital would have been
(C) be generated if a portion of the capital were
(D) be generated if a portion of the capital was
(E) be generated if a portion of the capital had been

I received a PM asking me to comment.

IF + WAS implies something that MIGHT BE TRUE:
If John WAS the thief means that John MIGHT HAVE BEEN the thief.

IF + WERE implies something that is CONTRARY-TO-FACT:
If John WERE the thief means that John ISN'T the thief.

In the SC above, a portion of the capital is NOT being invested in another form.
Thus, the subjunctive WERE is needed:

...the income that WOULD BE generated if a portion of the capital WERE invested in another form.

The correct answer is C.
