theres a 2-3 split.
"her" should refer to a person and not an object. In this case, "her" refers to the competitor. Eliminate A & B

In option (D), the phrase "her ski-tip" is WRONG. The "tip" belongs to the ski and not to the competitor. Eliminate (D)
Option (E) uses the pronoun "when" which can be used to modify a noun event or time, such as period, age, year.

IMO, answer is
(C)
agree with euro it is C
A and B contains modification error
D and E are unnecessarily wordy

hi guys
what do you say about comma between two || words: caught...., and somersaulted.... in C, as two me we don`t need it.
in correct answer.
i definitely admit that E is wordy and usage of when is debatable, but my pick for E

IMO E, C changes the meaning. C says that 'the last competitor caught the pole, and somersaulted into the soft snow.' No this changes the meaning. It says that the last competitor did both actions (caught and somersaulted). No, somersaulted is happened when something else happened. It was not intended by the last competitor.

Trying to keep her balance on the icy surface, the last competitor's ski-tip caught the pole and somersaulted into the soft snow.

A. the last competitor's ski-tip caught the pole and somersaulted into the soft snow. -------> wrong modifier
B. the ski-tip of the last competitor caught the pole and somersaulted in the soft snow. -------> wrong modifier
C. the last competitor caught the pole with the tip of her ski, and somersaulted into the soft snow. ------> I also feel that two actions at the same time are wrong
D. the last competitor caught the pole with her ski-tip, which made her somersault into the soft snow. ------> awkward
E. the last competitor somersaulted into the soft snow when the tip of her ski was caught by the pole.-----> though the option is passive but I feel is best out of 5........

whats the OA???????

You are right that COMMA before AND should not be there and i discussed this concept with RON earlier for some other similar question, but still only possible answer is Op C, Op E is clearly wrong. This is not an official question, not even taken form any standard resource thats why this question is poorly written, but not one think, GMAT doesn't test punctuations, GMAT never put options which are solely based on punctuation errors.

COMMA + AND ---> used to connect either two independent clause OR to connect the final element of a LIST.

In sum, IMO this is a poorly written question!!!

I would have certainly opted for C it was written this way,

the last competitor caught the pole with the tip of her ski, and thus somersaulted into the soft snow.

IMO E.

OA Please.
