Please refer to the problem attached. I can arrive at the solution using clumsy calculation

area = x1(y2-y3) + .... etc

Is there any better way?

please help.

Base of both the triangles are on X-axis
hence the value of base can be found by simply deducing the difference between the x-ordinates

the height will be the y-ordinate of the apex.

Triangle PQR: PR=4 (10-6), height =4 (as y-ordinate for Q is 4)
Area = 4*4/2

Triangle LMN: LN = 12 (14-2), height = 12 (as y-ordinate for M is 12)
Area = 12*12/2

Ratio of areas: (4*4/2) / (12*12/2) = 1/9
