Tough SC-2

by andy123 » Sun Sep 27, 2009 8:40 am
Schistosomiasis, a disease caused by a parasitic worm, is prevalent in hot, humid climates, and it has become more widespread as irrigation projects have enlarged the habitat of the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle.

a> the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle

b> the freshwater snails that are the parasite's hosts in part of their life cycle

c> freshwater snails which become the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycles

d> freshwater snails which become the hosts of the parasite during the parasite's life cycle

e> parasite's hosts, freshwater snails which become their hostsduring their life cycles

IMO B.

ITs - Wrong antecedent - A and C are wrong.

E - Changes the meaning

D - "parasite's life cycle" is wrong. Its "snails lifecycle"

Oa pls.

freshwater snails (plural)- takes verb "are"
parasite's -singular possessive takes verb "its"

parasite's is a possessive noun here. one can also read it as "hosts of the parasite"-this would show that parasite is indeed a noun

parasitic would have been adjective

the explanation to this question is still a mystery guys....

the OA for this one is A but how is it possible?

I mean how is it like its refers to parasite....In option A is it not parasite but parasite's so anyway its does not refer to parasite here so A is wrong....

May I please request the Gurus to pitch in for this nasty one.....

PS: this is from OG 2nd verbal supplement Q.92...

Many thanks!

Regards,

B is wrong because of 'their'
C is wrong because it should be "the freshwater snails" since it referx to an entire species class
D is wrong due to same reason as C
E changes the meaning
A is the right answer. Here 'its' refers to parasite.

possessive nouns can serve as antecedents only to possessive pronouns.

Its is singular. so it can only refer to Parasite, not to Hosts (plural).

further , Its can refer to Parasite's as its is a possessive pronoun.

this is just my guess. to be sure we need expert guidance.

"that are the parasite's hosts for part of its life cycle" -- this can be simplified as "that are the hosts of the parasite for part of its life cycle." which is much better than A, but since there is no option -we have to consider its possessive form "parasite's hosts"

In "D" - "which become widespread" creates ambiguity -Is it the snail or the disease (Schistosomiasis)? There is no comma before which.

Also, "its" would refer to the nearest noun, which is "parasite" and not the disease.

Logically, How can "Disease" have a lifecycle? Living beings have a lifecycle, since they have LIFE ;)

OG says - " The correct preposition to express duration in combination with HOST is FOR, not IN "

Want to confirm:

"its" refers to parasite or snail?
