Because of less availability and greater demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like gold.
a)Because of less availability and greater demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like gold.
b)Because of less availability and increased demand for scientific research, platinum remains consistently expensive, like that of gold.
c)Because of decreased availability and increased demand in scientific research, platinum remains expensive, like gold.
d)Because of decreased availability and increased demand for scientific research, platinum remains expensive, like gold.
e)Because of decreased availability and greater demand in scientific research, platinum remains at a consistently high price, like that of gold.

OA C

In c are we comparing platinum to gold or platinum remains expensive to gold remains expensive. If latter, shouldn't we use as instead of like

We are comparing PLATINUM TO GOLD.

Remove the opening modifier to understand structure:

Platinum remains expensive, like gold. We can write it as "Like Gold, Platinum remains expensive".

When we use AS we mean literally
1) George behaves as a doctor = George is actually a doctor
2) George behaves like a doctor = George is not a doctor but behaving like one. We are taling about this 2nd usage in the your sentence.

If you look at all the options there are two differences between sentences, so you can split the answer into
C,E and A,B,D - Based on 'demand for' and 'demand in'. By now you would have figured out that 'demand in' is the correct usage in the senence.
Now out of C and E, you can eliminate E on two prefaces - 1st E is more wordy and not as concise(if you you feel difficult to rule it out on basis of comparison).
2nd, The element being compared is Platinum and not the price of platinum. Therefore, like gold is the correct usage.

Since LIKE is in all of the answer choices, the intended meaning must be that platinum is LIKE gold.
