Yes, When I had seen this question for the first time, I marked A too. But C is correct.

intention to is an incorrect idiom.

Correct forms of the idiom: intent to, intent of, intention of.

Answers B and E use the pronouns "their" and "they" which do not have a referent.
Answer A includes the stylistically flawed phrase "with the intention to sustain..." "Intended to sustain" used in answers C and D sounds much better and is less wordy. Answer D can also be dismissed because of the use of "exhausting," which is a worse choice than "exhausted" used in answer C.

In C - I see a flaw that the oil resources is NOT qualified with 'its' and without which the meaning is not proper.

Kaisa,

Could you pleased explain what is wrong with D.
(C) fund intended to sustain the state's economy after oil reserves are exhausted
(D) fund intended to sustain the state's economy after exhausting its oil reserves

In "D", "its" is referring to Alaska. right?

Regards,
Nishant

(C) fund intended to sustain the state's economy after oil reserves are exhausted
- does this not change the meaning ? Which oil reserves is the author talking about ? Alaska's or ..?
(D) fund intended to sustain the state's economy after exhausting its oil reserves
- Why is this incorrect.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

(D). fund intended to sustain the state's economy after exhausting its oil reserves

I find D misleading for two reasons:

1. Its may refer to Alaska, fund, or economy
2. Even if its is referring to Alaska, the option D might mean that fund itself will first exhaust the oil reserve and then sustain the economy.

C is better.

We are discussing the same question in another post -

I would suggest that we should search a bit before starting a new thread.
