Sigh..Need some help!!

by Anzu » Sat Aug 27, 2011 11:38 pm
This is my first time to post here, and I was hoping you all could help me out.

I just sat for my first GMAT exam yesterday, and I got a 510.

I've taken 4 ManhattanGMAT tests.

1st 480
2nd 430
3rd 530
4th 580

At the same time, I took the self-study online course since I'm living in Japan currently. Studied every day for 3 months and this was all I could do.

I focused on my weaknesses and tried to hit my problem areas, but I guess it wasn't enough.

I felt pretty nervous before the test, but I calmed my self down and went into the test confident. However, the Math killed me. I ended up with a 26Q and a 35V. What should I do?

I've always done well in school (4.0 in highschool and 3.97 in undergrad), but these standardized tests always kill me (didn't do so hot on the ACT back in the day).

Is it even possible to bring my score up to a 660-670?

Sincerely frustrated,

nhx

I can understand your situation , but you are improving....

It looks like you need little bit more review on basics both in quant and verbal....Practice a lot from gmat prep and OG, They identical to the real gmat.

Dont loose focus
Don't look for the incorrect things that you have done rather look for remedies....

1. Third party tests are not advisable when you can use the real thing. Plan on structuring your next line of diagnostics with the GMAC tests, in whatever form you can get them. Your score was in the realm of your 4 scores but closer to where you started out. Using 'real' material means you're not second guessing if the material is harder or easier. It doesn't have an agenda.

2. You need to study smarter not harder. Where are your strengths and weakesses? Work to get up to speed...

3. Get some customized and personalized feedback from reputable source with a track record. Many services, ours included, work with students all over the world. Your being in Japan is not a hinderance, just a situation that you need to work with, time-wise.

4. Chances are you didn't fully quell your nerves. Identify 'why' you were nervous and when you've felt this prior.

5. Reality check I: if you were scoring the 400s - high 500s, you would likely NOT going to score anywhere near the high 600s on test day.

6. Reality check II: you could absolutely get in the high 600s, but wishful thinking and haphazard planning will not get you there. You need an action plan, serious practice, commitment, a goal, and a robust action plan. We see those improvements all the time, but you need an effective strategy to gain ownership of the material, not just a...dream.

Get busy.

Hi Anzu,

Yes, you can definitely raise your score to a 660-670. For inspiration, you can read posts in the I Just Beat The GMAT forum where you will find many similar stories about people raising their scores.

I should also repeat Bara's assertion that the real practice tests (available for free download at https://www.mba.com/the-gmat/download-fr ... n-software) are the best way to gauge your ability. Also know that you can write each official practice test multiple times (as I show in my article: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/03/ ... iple-times)

Cheers,
Brent
