There are four envelopes - E1, E2, E3 and E4- in which one was supposed to put letters L1, L2, L3 and L4 meant for persons C1, C2, C3 and C4 respectively, but by mistake the letters got jumbled up and went in wrong envelopes. Now if C2 is allowed to open an envelope at random, then how will he identify the envelope containing the letter for him?

I. L2 has been put in E1.
II. The letter belonging to C3 has gone in the correct envelope.

What's the source of the question? By reading the question, you get scared, but surprisingly, Statement 1 gives the straight answer. C2 knows that the letter belonging to him, L2, is put up in envelope E1. He will pick envelope E1. Sufficient.

Statement 2 is certainly insufficient; however, there is a discrepancy in the statement. The question says that "the letters got jumbled up and went in wrong envelopes;" however, as per Statement 2, the letter (L3) belonging to C3 has gone in the correct envelope (E3). How can both the information be correct simultaneously? For a DS question, narration, both statements together present a holistic scenario.

The correct answer: A

Hope this helps!
