he house on the beach is painted ,with a good paint,brighter than sun.

brighter modifier paint or The house.

The driver,who worked for mr beans,fighting for survival

fighting modifies mr beans or driver.

rule of participle phrase it that i modifies the subject of the preceding clause so fighting must modify beans.

The driver,Fighting for survival modifies the driver.

particle modifier modifies the main subject of the sentence or subject of the preceding clause.


Bihar is India's poorest state, with an annual per capita income of $111, lower than in the most impoverished countries of the world

(A) lower than in

(B) lower than that of

(C) and lower than that of

(D) which is lower than in

(E) which is lower than it is in

first question is which in D & E modifies per capita of income or Bihar.
Which should modify per captia as it is the nearest subject

Lower is a adjective modifier which modifies income or bihar ?

please ealborate on it.

To use your examples:

Removing the second comma would make "brighter" modify "paint". Without it, the information between the commas is parenthetical.

Mr. Beans is not the subject of the preceding clause, "who" is; in any case, for similar reasons, "fighting" should modify "driver." You would need to rewrite the sentence if you wanted to make it clear that it was Mr. Beans fighting for survival.

"Lower" is not a participle, so the modification works differently. Aside from context telling us that Bihar can't be "lower" (only its income can), we would need "and is" before "lower" for it to modify Bihar.

Its not clear what the phrase lower than in the most impoverished is modifying .What is lower ?
The only two options that make it clear are D and E ?
