The strand fills with water

by sameerballani » Sat Jun 04, 2011 10:10 pm
The strand fills with water during the rainy season that the peat then holds and keeps it humid, all of which creates conditions enabling trees to grow.
A. enabling trees to grow.
B. for the trees to grow.
C. for growing trees.
D. that enable the trees to grow.
E. that the trees can grow.
OA:D
Could any1 help in eliminating all the wrong choices.

Thanks

Eliminated B,C & E coz' they are incomplete.(There is a difference between conditions that enable the trees to grow & conditions to grow trees ) & I think D more appropriately modifies the condition using 'that'.
Just my opinion.Would appreciate Expert Comments too !

Okay.. Now let us see the parts of speech
Conditions - noun.. that(relative pronound)
A sentense without a verb has very little meaning
enabling, to grow... these two words.. if you feel that these are verbs then it is like inviting trouble.
to grow is an infinitive... enabling is a gerund. They are not verbs
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

Hi,
I don't think 'enabling' is gerund. It is an adjective.
Cheers!

Enabling the software = activation of software... is enabling a gerund in here.

"All of which" (Noun) "creates" (Verb) "conditions" (Object)...THAT..."_____"(Verb)

We need the "that" to make it clear that it is the conditions and NOT the "all of which" that enables the trees to grow. The answer is D.

The meaning of the sentence is that the conditions are "enabling." B, C and E slightly changes that meaning.

Hello,

It was said that if we have a comma before an ing modifier then only it will modify the complete sentence, otherwise it will just modify the preceding noun.

So in that case, 'enabling' is correctly modifying 'conditions' rather than the complete sentence.

So can you please explain why option 'A' is wrong?
