The proliferation of so-called

by clock60 » Thu Apr 14, 2011 1:49 pm
hi guys
my particular question:what is wrong in E, ideas about other answers are also highly appreciated.

The proliferation of so-called cybersquatters, people who register the Internet domain names of high-profile companies in hopes of reselling the rights to those names for a profit, led to passing the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act in 1999, allowing companies to seed up to $100000 in damages against those who register domain names with the sole intent of selling them later.
A. passing the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act in 1999, allowing companies to seek up to $100000 in damages against those who register domain names with the sole intent of selling them later.
B. the passage of the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act in 1999, which allows companies to seek up to $100000 in damages against those who register domain names with the sole intent that they will sell
C. the passage in 1999 of the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which allows companies to seek up to $100000 in damages against those who register domain names with the sole intent of selling
D. the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, which was passed in 1999, and it allows companies to seek up to $100000 in damages against those who register domain names with the sole intent to sell
E. the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, passed in 1999 and allowing companies to seek up to $100000 in damages against those who register domain names with the sole intent of selling

C Sounds Awkward but that's the only correct one with no parallelism issue. E has //ism issue.

@Target

Will you please justify your point of parallelism??? In my opinion its correct...both the participles are acting as an adjective...and present and past participles can be parallel...same as in this example...

Football team, tired after four hours of play and wanting to reach home early, took the shortcut.

This is a tricky problem, because one will really get confuse b/w C and E...Moreover Op C looks really AWKWARD...but i have seen some explanation of this question on MANHATTAN Forum earlier, there i guess Ron suggested that led to passage is meaningful..please google for the correct explanation

.

Think about MEANING not just GRAMMAR!

The proliferation of cybersquatters led legislators to pass an act. That's the situation. The proliferation of cybersquatters itself didn't lead to the act. That's one basis upon which choice E (and choice D) can be eliminated...

you clearly need a relative pronoun because it's the consumer protection act that allows companies to seek compensation.

I think an easy way to check if the Q is about parallelism is to flip the clauses around the coordinating conjunction. If the sentence still stands up, then the Q involves parallelism...

The proliferation of so-called cybersquatters, allowing companies to seek up to $100000 in damages and led the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act... -> this does not make great sense, does it? so the Q is not strictly about balancing clauses around 'and'.

Consider the other example:

Football team, tired after four hours of play and wanting to reach home early, took the shortcut.

Football team, wanting to reach home early and tired after four hours of play, took the shortcut. -> this still sounds good.

thoughts?

Thanks...
