This was already posted here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/archaeologis ... 10269.html

But I am still not clear why "to avoid" cannot be used. Can anyone please clarify?

Archaeologists in Ireland believe that a recently discovered chalice, which dates from the eighth century, was probably buried to keep from being stolen by invaders.

(A) to keep from
(B) to keep it from
(C) to avoid
(D) in order that it would avoid
(E) in order to keep from

I read the posts on the link you provide but i still don't understand why we need to use "IT"...some say without IT, its not clear what to keep from being stolen??? but i think logically its crystal clear that its "chalice" which is keep from being stolen.

Also as i picked Op C as my answer so i don't have any idea why this is an incorrect idiom. These things are horrifying for a Non-native speaker like me. As this is an official question i have to accept the importance of this question.

Experts please help!!!
