Q-Representatives of the state university system believe that the newly funded scholarship program will be used more as a replacement for need-based student loans rather than for other merit-based scholarships because its award per student, only one-quarter of a semester's tuition, is far less than most merit-based awards, which are at least one half of a semester's tuition.

Q is not underlined properly. What is the source?

Because X -> X should be a clause, which I can't see in A, D and E.

I believe that either B or C. I am not sure.

i think whoever give the answer should give the reason also. here answer varies from a to C but no explanation.

and if OA is available then that should be told after such confusion.

I am on C....

A wrong because of "because its award per student, only one-quarter of a semester’s tuition, is far less than"
B wrong because of "because it awards only one-quarter of a semester’s tuition per student, is not nearly as much as"
D wrong because of " is not nearly as much as it is for"
E wrong because of "because its award per student, only one-quarter of a semester’s tuition, is far less than it is for"

Only C option is using correct parallelism i.e "for need-based student loans more than for other merit-based scholarships" and than " far less than " connects the prior sentence in a more logical way............

It should be E...here is my justification.
As we know the best way to solve lengthy SC question is look for one mistake and compare in rest of the options.
so first of all The sentence intend to say program will be used as a replacement more for need-based stu.., than for other merit based stu..

Below is my elimination:

A. more as a replacement for need-based student loans rather than for other merit-based scholarships because its award per student, only one-quarter of a semester's tuition, is far less than-->INCORRECT: Parallelism error: "more as a...than as a"..and NOT "than for"
Also 'rather' is NOT required.

B. more as a replacement for need-based student loans than for other merit-based scholarships because it awards only one-quarter of a semester's tuition per student, is not nearly as much as -->INCORRECT: Parallelism error: "more as a...than as a"..and NOT "than for".

C. as a replacement for need-based student loans more than for other merit-based scholarships because it awards only one-quarter of a semester's tuition per student, far less than -->INCORRECT: creates sentence fragmentation as we can see in the non underlined part, there is 'which' so it will become double passive

D. as a replacement for need-based student loans than other merit-based scholarships because its award of only one-quarter of a semester's tuition per student, is not nearly as much as it is for-->INCORRECT: 'for' is require after 'than' or else the sentence meaning is changed.

E. as a replacement more for need-based student loans rather than for other merit-based scholarships because its award per student, only one-quarter of a semester's tuition, is far less than it is for--> CORRECT: Everything perfect with this sentence:
1>more for...than for
2>award per student is less than it(awards OR prize) for other merit based awards

I fail to understand how C can be correct though.

To me in ".........because it awards only one-quarter of a semester's tuition per student......." , the underlined portion is wronly used. Here the "it" refers to the "scholarship program" . But if we look at the sentence structure ,
"Representatives of the state university system believe that the newly funded scholarship program will be used ......." , the underlined portion indicates that " the newly funded scholarship program " can't be the subject.
The scholarship program can't award...

The subject is the "representatives".

Pl. explain.

I smell another re-written sentence, and one that has not fared well during its transformation! Your time would be much better spent discussing the real deal, as the correct answer to the above-posted question reads poorly...

Officials at the United States Mint believe that the Sacagawea dollar coin will be used more as a substitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than four quarters, which weigh
5.67 grams each.

A. more as a substitute for four quarters rather than for the dollar bill because its weight, only 8.1 grams, is far less than

Thanks Kevin. I don't mean to criticize people but everyone would benefit more if things were translated 100%. :)

I'm between B and D but would go with B because of the "its" in D. Also, B somewhat mimics the original sentence more than D does.
