In order to conserve the energy and heat they need to spend the entire winter sitting motionless over incubating eggs, male emperor penguins huddle over the nests in groups, thereby reducing the rate at which they burn energy so that it is 25 percent lower than it would be for isolated birds.

my doubt :i somehow feel that above sentence is a run on
i feel that in the initial clause "that" is missing and without that "that" the sentence is a run on


i feel that were the sentence as follows then the sentence wud have been oki

In a relative clause serving as an adjective, that is often omitted.

SC7 in the OG12:
The company has become increasingly willing to compete for the mass market sales it would in the past have conceded to rivals.
Here, that has been omitted from the relative clause in red, but its presence is understood.
The conveyed meaning is as follows:
The company has become increasingly willing to compete for the mass market sales THAT it would in the past have conceded to rivals.

but plz tell me : i feel that the initial clause in the original sentence is a complete independent clause in itself

if it is really a complete independent clause then will it be oki to join two independent clause with comma ?

The portion in red serves not as an independent clause but as an ADVERB modifying the verb in the FOLLOWING independent clause.
WHY do male emperor penguins HUDDLE?
They huddle IN ORDER TO CONSERVE THE ENERGY AND HEAT THEY NEED TO SPEND THE ENTIRE WINTER SITTING MOTIONLESS.

I think D and E are incorrect because of the use of "which"..
here which referes to group not the whole clause.
Correct me if I am wrong

Here, which reduces lacks a singular antecedent.

On answer C don't u think there is an issue as well with: "as compared to what it would be with" it seemed to wordy to me, i didn't think about the "omitted that" that you mentioned, nice point!

This line of reasoning is valid.
Only PARALLEL FORMS may be compared.

C: the rate they burn energy, as compared to what it would be
Here, the two phrases in red are not parallel.
Eliminate C.

I wanted to discuss this question in the light of the idiom Compared to or Compared with.

I think both compared to/compared with is right in GMAT, but

X compared to/with Y. Here X and Y should show some sort of statistics, Right? Please shower some light.
