"As well as" is just an additive phrase that joins two subjects but doesn't form a compound subject on addition. As a result the number of the original subject doesn't change because of the additive phrase. Only and can join two subjects to form a compound subject.
example:
rjangada as well as johny IS studying hard to beat the GMAT.
rjangada and johny ARE studying hard to beat the GMAT.



PS: Refer Manhattan SC's Chapter on Subject verb agreement.
