Bold Phrase CR

by aspirant2011 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 10:32 pm
During the past year, Pro-Tect Insurance Company's total payouts on car-theft claims were larger than the company can afford to sustain. Pro-Tect cannot reduce the number of car-theft policies it carries, so cannot protect itself against continued large payouts that way. Therefore, Pro-Tect has decided to offer a discount to holders of car-theft policies whose cars have antitheft devices. Many policyholders will respond to the discount by installing antitheft devices, since the amount of the discount will within two years typically more than cover the cost of installation. Thus, because cars with antitheft devices are rarely stolen, Pro-Tect's plan is likely to reduce its annual payouts. In the argument above, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first rules out a certain strategy for achieving a goal; the second presents the strategy that was adopted instead and whose effectiveness the argument assesses.

B. The first is a judgment made in support of a certain conclusion; the second is that conclusion.

C. The first has been used as a consideration to support adopting a certain strategy for achieving a goal; the second reports a decision to adopt an alternative strategy.

D. The first provides evidence in favor of adopting a certain strategy for achieving a goal; the second reports a decision to pursue an alternative goal.

E. The first is a consideration offered against adopting a certain strategy for achieving a goal; the second is the main conclusion that the argument is seeking to establish
OA: C. I tried to solve the problem in the following manner-

Conclusion: Pro-Tect's plan is likely to reduce its annual payouts.

I was able to mark out B,D & E option but went with A because felt that the first bold phrased part was acting as a ruling out of certain strategy and second bold phrased part was being assessed in the argument.

Is A wrong because it says that the strategy was adopted but the argument says that it was decided???

Please let me know where I went wrong and the strategy by which I can solve bold phrased questions.
Hi,

This looks like an official question. Answer MUST be A It absolutely cant be C as C says -"The first has been used as a consideration to support adopting a certain strategy "- which is against the argument.

Please recheck the OA.

Also be careful with official BF answers, there are various versions of the same stems floating on forums.

I think the gmat club version is the one u posted and looks like the OA is A.
Cheers !!

I think I was not clear in my last post. If u read gmat club and mgmat forum posts carefully, u will notice that the stem is the same in both, however the portions boldfaced are different, thus answers will differ.

additional tip- if u see any OG boldface questions in gmat prep dont just jump and select the answer with a wicked smile - The portions of stem that are bolded will be different in the gmat prep version of the question with the same stem.
Cheers !!

Put away the timer, and decode every CR stem you solve into premise-conclusion etc- this is a very lame tip, but trust me CR's are very masterable with a bit of effort. Try to perfect the basic CR types(S/W/A/Resolve/Infer) first and then jump into boldface/evaluate/flaw.
Cheers !!

I agree with BBlast's suggestion that CR can be mastered if you understand the basics well. We do cover basics quite well in our CR free trial and we also offer the Bold face reasoning concept and application file concepts there. Take a look at those concepts (they are available free of charge) and see if they help you. Click below to register:
