Terry and Pat

by harsh.champ » Wed Feb 17, 2010 6:24 am
Terry and Pat collected cans for recycling. What was the ratio of the number of carts Terry collected to the number of cans Pat collected?

(1) Pat collected 50 percent of the cans that they collected.
(2) Terry collected 140 cans.
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)

A because the equation is T/P and we know that pat collected 50%... so then terry collected the other 50%... 1:1

is carts and can same???

i am assumin this Q only has cans(to be collected by Terry and Pat)

1.
x- total number of cans collected by Terry and Pat
Pat collected 50 percent=0.5x
therefore pat has = x - cans held by Pat(0.5x)=0.5x

total ratio= cans held by Terry/ cans held by Pat=0.5x/0.5x=1

hence sufficient

2.
we do not know how many cans Pat collected

St.1: Pat collected 50% so obviously Terry collected another 50% so their ratio = 1:1 -------------sufficient
St.2: Terry collected 140 cans. we know nothing about Pat. --------------insufficient
