We use past perfect for an action that has a corresponding action occurring after it in past i.e.
If X and Y are two events that have taken place in past and X took place before Y, then we use past perfect with X and simple past tense for Y.
X is referred to have occurred in early past where as Y is referred to have occurred in later past.
