Superficially college graduates

by akhpad » Mon Jul 05, 2010 4:53 am
Superficially, college graduates in 1982 resembled college graduates of 1964; they were fairly conservative, well dressed, and interested in tradition; they respected their parents. But there was a deep-seated difference: a majority of the members of the class of 1982 who were surveyed in their freshman year stated that making a good income was an important reason for their decision to go to college.

The statements in the passage, if true, best support which of the following conclusions?

A. The concerns of college graduates of 1964 were superficial compared to the financial worries of college graduates of 1982.
B. Fewer than half the students of the class of 1964 declared as freshmen that they entered college in order to increase their earning potential.
C. Educational background did not play as significant a part in determining income in 1964 as it did in 1982.
D. A majority of the members of the class of 1964 revised their reasons for attending college between their freshman year and college graduation.
E. College graduates of 1964 were actually less conservative than college graduates of 1982.

I am bit way off between conclusion and "must be true"' types. I am assuming this to be "Must be true" type and giving my undertstanding.

Plz notethe key word "deep-seated difference: a majority of the members of the class of 1982 .

Comparision is made between students of 1964 &1984. Must be true types has to directly follow from the contents of the stem

A. The concerns of college graduates of 1964 were superficial compared to the financial worries of college graduates of 1982.

Never said so in the stem.

B. Fewer than half the students of the class of 1964 declared as freshmen that they entered college in order to increase their earning potential.

Looks attractive has it does some level of comparision. Lets hold it for a while

C. Educational background did not play as significant a part in determining income in 1964 as it did in 1982.

No where role of Educational background is mentioned. Ignore her.

D. A majority of the members of the class of 1964 revised their reasons for attending college between their freshman year and college graduation

Ohh yeah,,The stems atleast talks about 1984 freshman..but not abt 1962 guys. Dump her.

E. College graduates of 1964 were actually less conservative than college graduates of 1982.

Not really. we are told that both are atleast superficially conservative.

SO we are left with B. We can tweak ard a bit for explanation.Plz take care of the words "deep-seated difference".
So author intends that students of 1982 differed from that students of 1964 in a certain way.. So what is that way??
yes.. Majority of 1984 brats are interested in good income.

So the direct opposite is fewer than majority of 1962 brats would have declared them as earning good income is not their important reason...
If not, there wont be a Deep seated difference rite??

Pick B
