old english

by vscid » Sun Jan 04, 2009 10:01 am
Old English had three genders that resembled those of the Germans and so was probably very difficult for a foreign traveler to learn in a short time.

a] Old English had three genders that resembled those of the Germans

b] Old English had three genders resembling those of the Germans

c] The three genders of Old English resembled a German's

d] Old English's three genders resembled the German's

e] The three genders of old English that resembled those of the Germans
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

The green part signals us the subject: OLD ENGLISH

Eliminate C, D and E

Between A and B

I will choose resembled over resembling since this happened in the past ( was )

a] Old English had three genders that resembled those of the Germans

b] Old English had three genders resembling those of the Germans

The statement conjugated with an and requires Old english to be the subject of starting statement, option C is vague s owe are left with A and B:

a] Old English had three genders that resembled those of the Germans

b] Old English had three genders resembling those of the Germans

Resembling the participal seems a better option to me than an use of resembled...so I will go with A

Thanks Logitech.

I am not sure.

what does 'that' refers to? I always had a notion, 'that' always refers to immediate preceding noun. if 'those' refers to genders as well then the sentence sounds crazy isn't it?

Old English had three genders [Genders]that resembled those[Genders] of the Germans

There is NO option as such. I was just trying to understand the BASICS.

a phrase is more concise than a clause (see GMAT EXAM SUCCESS by LeaningEpress)

so B is correct

resembling here dose not mean a continuousness
