The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

IMO A. I don't think "resembling" is right. "resembled" fits into the sentence.

"that resembled" refers to "old english had three genders"

"resembling" refers to the "three genders"



B should be correct.

When there are two past events and one is older than other, then olden event will represent past perfet,and other will be simple past.

"so was probably very difficult" is the past even hapenned in effect after "Old English had three genders".
So Had is justify.

Now wilt "HAD", you will use past participle so "resembled " is also looking good.
