hi, the answer of your question is not even given in MGMAT SC book. I will try to give it a shot but want a expert view on this.

"Which" can act as a relative pronoun, but "them" cannot. The other relative pronouns are "who" and "that". In this case "of which" is acting as a object of a preposition and introducing a subordinate clause ( "which" is a relative pronoun here ). Since it is introducing a subordinate clause we need an action verb - "were"

-- This model explains all known subatomic particles, SOME OF WHICH
WERE only recently discovered. - right - Here of "which" is acting as a relative pronoun.

Refer to El Nino SC from OG-12 ( I am forgetting the question number, pardon me for that ).
El Nino, the periodic abnormal warming of the sea surface off Peru, is a phenomenon in which changes in the ocean and atmosphere combine to allow the warm water that has accumulated in the western Pacific to flow back to the east.
The usage of "which" is same here.

--This model explains all known subatomic particles, SOME OF THEM
only recently discovered. - right - them is just a pronoun

--This model explains all known subatomic particles, SOME OF WHICH
only recently discovered - wrong ( need a working verb)

I hope this helps.

Hi Avik,

Your answers are correct. and these examples are given in the Manhattan SC guides under relative pronouns.

My issue is that I am not able to understand it at all....Can you refer some other elaborated source to read this topic?

And thanks all the guys for sending comments.

Yes this examples are given in subgroup modifier in advance part of the book. Its only written which construction to use and not to. The reasons are not given. Anyway I tried to give you a logical reason for this.

Which topic you are not able to understand ? All this topic is covered in MGMAT SC, so I would ask you to go through this book once again. The content in this book is very dense. If you are a non native english speaker like me, then I would request you to go through this book once again. I think your doubt will be cleared.
