Kaplan CD CAT

by yellowho » Sun Feb 20, 2011 1:47 am
Ok so I've heard its scoring is way below. Just wondering what people's thoughts are on the verbal section. I actually think the math is good. Difficult but the thinking is very similar to gmat. good practice. However, I think the verbal is way off. Especially the SC. There's no structure to the question. In fact I've seen two errors with the usage of "whom."

Indeed it tough. Though not sure if questions are wrong.

Hi yellowwho,

We're constantly monitoring our CD cats, and we stand behind their accuracy. That said, errors do slip through the cracks--if you think you've spotted a problem with an SC question, send me a PM with the details. I'll check it out, and either clear up the misunderstanding or report and correct the error. Thanks!

Sure. If you look at my posts. There's one math problem from the CD thats definitely bad. All of the answers are valid. That vs who. While that can replace who and who cannot replace that in real life on gmat that cannot replace who. thats supported by mountains of data from og. usage of present participle is wrong in a few places. And at least two problem that is used incorrectly in the non-underlined part so it didn't affect the question but its still wrong.

Kaplan stands by the CAT score? Can you responds to the mountain of posts that says its too low and even suggest it is marketing gimmick. I actually don't care either way; I just want quality practice. I think I found that in Kaplan except for the SC section. Also, I actually really like the math difficulty.

Hi yellowho,

The group that reports underscoring is a self-selecting sample, as the many students who feel their scores are accurate don't feel a need to come to these boards and post--and I see almost as many post saying our tests are too easy as saying our tests are too hard! In addition, all of this is compounded by the fact that past algorithms, not longer in active use but still in circulation, did produce scores that are too low.

That said, when in doubt, you can't beet the official GMATprep scores for accuracy. They use the actual GMAT scoring algorithm--something no test prep company can boast.

Can you PM me links to your posts so I can investigate them?

Thanks!

Thats one of them.

I have the 2009 version from the book. Is that the "old" algorithm? I agree with you that some Kaplan tests are too easy but those are the online CATs (I only took one, the free one).

Hi yellowho,

I actually don't know the Kaplan Premier material as well as I know our classroom resources (the two are handled by different divisions of the company). Contact [email protected] and they should be able to tell you when the most recent update to the premier CATs went into effect.

I'll take a look at the thread you suggested--thanks for bringing it to my attention! Fell free to pm me with any similar issues.

Best of luck in your preparation!
