2. Many companies now have employee assistance programs that enable employees, free of charge, to improve their physical fitness, reduce stress, and learn ways to stop smoking. These programs increase worker productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lessen insurance costs for employee health care. Therefore, these programs benefit the company as well as the employee.
Which of the following, if true, most significantly strengthens the conclusion above?
(A) Physical fitness programs are often the most popular services offered to employees.
(B) Studies have shown that training in stress management is not effective for many people.
(C) Regular exercise reduces people's risk of heart disease and provides them with increased energy.
(D) Physical injuries sometimes result from entering a strenuous physical fitness program too quickly.
(E) Employee assistance programs require companies to hire people to supervise the various programs offered.

Why C is a better answer than A? Please comment.

the arguments speaks of all benefits (increase worker productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lessen insurance costs for employee health care) as far as the company is concerned and at the end jumps to conclude that these programs benefit both the company and the employees.

If we have to strengthen this argument we need some evidence that employees also benefit from these programs.

C does exactly that.

E- if at all, it weakens the argument
D - if at all, it weakens the argument
B - again it weakens the argument
A - irrelevant - it does not strengthen or weaken the conclusion "these programs benefit the company as well as the employee. "

I also think that A should be the answer. What if employees are not attending the program. In this case, Choice A is confirming that program is popular, indicating that employees are attending the program. As far as option C is concerned, what if medication is done in the program for aforesaid benefits, and this makes option C irrelavent.

Option A says that Physical fitness programs are often the most popular services offered to employees.

Popular does not mean that they are beneficial to both the parties. What is the program is popular but not attended by employees. Then, in that case there is no benefit to any of the involved parties..

As per power score bible find out the conclusion and then whether argument is strong or weak. Conclusion is in blue. This argument is obviously weak, why? If program is helping employees then how it is beneficial to company. Option which gives us this answer is the strengthening answer. Let's analyze all options.

Which of the following, if true, most significantly strengthens the conclusion above?

(A) Physical fitness programs are often the most popular services offered to employees. -- Incorrect - this is just a statement which doesn't has any effect on the conclusion. Ok these programs are often the most popular services offered to employees, but how employees are using these services? no information. After using the service how many employees are getting benefited? No Information.
(B) Studies have shown that training in stress management is not effective for many people. - Incorrect - This actually weakens the argument. If the training is not effective then it is not beneficial for company.
(C) Regular exercise reduces people's risk of heart disease and provides them with increased energy. - Correct - If program increases the energy of the employees then it will be obviously beneficial for the company.
(D) Physical injuries sometimes result from entering a strenuous physical fitness program too quickly. - Incorrect - This actually weakens the argument. If injuries are resulting from entering a strenuous physical fitness program then it is not beneficial for company.
(E) Employee assistance programs require companies to hire people to supervise the various programs offered. - Incorrect - this also weakens the conclusion. If company has to hire more people then company's cost of operation will increase and program will not be beneficial
