Stacy I have a Few Questions

by wallo456 » Thu May 03, 2007 3:05 pm
Hello Stacy

I appreciate your evaluation of my profile

During undergraduate I received a bachelors degree in Information Science with a GPA of 2.63 from the State University of New York at Albany, while in school I worked part time and participated in may different extracurricular activities. I anticipate a GMAT in the 660-680 range (per previous practice tests)

Since graduation, I have worked as a software engineer with a financial services company for the past 3 years with increased responsibility spearheading several different projects and working heavily with offshore companies. This summer I will be taking an Accounting & Statistics Class at a local college to counter my GPA.

As far as extracurriculars I am a Team Leader with NYCares teaching classes for adult learners focusing on job readiness and computer tutorials.

My short term goals are to work for a consulting firm, or a multi-national corporation in a quantitative field so that I can gather the skills necessary to work in Finance with Emerging Markets. My top schools are Duke (for the International Business Concentration), and UNC (for the Consulting Concentration).

I have a few questions which are as follows:
What should I do to strengthen my application?
Are there any other schools that you recommend I take a look at?
Finally, I was already accepted to a Midlevel Program for fall of 07 do you think I should hold out and wait for a better school?

Thank you for your help and assistance.

The obvious weakness in your app is the GPA, whch can make it difficult to gain entry to the schools you listed. Taking the classes will be helpful. It is also good that you have a "story", having worked part time and being involved with a lot of activities.

It sounds like you have the basics covered. You will need to do some thinking about your goals, as they seem a bit scattered right now. It's hard for me to advise you on whether you should go with the program you have been admitted to. Is it a good fit for your goals? Will the career services support your goals? Is it a culture you are excited about? If so, you may want to run with it rather than taking a risk this next year.
