But with E, THEM seems not to be an issue

Am i getting it right Ron ?!
heh. yeah.

i've found that the OG sentence correction explanations are, in general, just not very good. in some places, they are downright inconsistent. (by contrast, most of the problems themselves are quite well written.)

i see what you mean.
in that problem, though, you shouldn't have to worry about the pronoun issue; you should be able to eliminate (b), (c), and (d) fairly quickly (flagrant non-parallelism at the end of the sentence).
Hi Ron,

So, right answer for this question is E .

Thanks & Regards
Saurabh

The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature; this stimulation sometimes results in the activation of certain biological cooling mechanisms, one of which is perspiration.

a. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerve endings in the mouth as does a rise in temperature - Incorrect because pronoun "they" is used for food

b. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, makes some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature - Incorrect because verb "makes" is used for foods

c. Certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth like a rise in temperature does - Incorrect because pronoun "they" is used for food

d. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is that these foods contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth and on the tongue as does a rise in temperature - Correct

e. The reason that certain spicy foods, such as the Habanero pepper, make some people sweat is because they contain a chemical that stimulates the same nerves in the mouth as does a rise in temperature - Incorrect because pronoun "they" is used for food

"spicy foods" is plural so usage of "makes" is incorrect. Hence we can eliminate A,B,C
In C there is an ambiguity what "they" refers to.
In E "The reason that ....." and "because" is verbose.
Hence D is the correct answer.

Would someone explain me why the usage of "like" on sentence C is incorrect? I could easily eliminate A, B and E, but I didn't notice any mistake on C and chose this one because D had that "on the tongue" which made me think it changed the meaning.

I am not a native english speaker although my english skills are not that bad. If someone can help me out, I'll be really thankful.

"like" is used to compare nouns. "as" is used to compare actions.

Here we are comparing how the nerve is stimulated by spicy food and how the nerve is stimulated by a raise in temperature.
Since we are comparing two actions, we use "as" and not "like".

The answer is E.

A and B are simply wrong because of use of "spicy foods... makes"

C is incorrect because of wrong usage of Same X as Y idiom.

D is incorrect because of altered meaning. "on the tounge?"

E is wordy, but grammatically correct and hence the best choice.

D is the correct answer.

A,and B introduce S-V errors.Spicy foods -makes? nope The correct form is foods.... make.

We are left with C,D,and E

C introduces another error. It uses a verb with like.Since like is preposition you can't use clauses with like.

E makes the mistake of reason .... is because. This is an incorrect idiom. The correct idiom is reason.... is that.According to MGMAT the reason... is because is incorrect because it is unidiomatic and redundant. When you use the word reason, you just state the reason.

Another issue with E is that it introduces an ambiguous pronoun they. They could refer to people as well as foods.

Looking at all posts i m still confused on the answer...

What is the correct answer...D or E?

D Clearly adds Tongue as an extra piece of info not mentioned in Original sentence shouldn't it be discarded???

The last thing that is to be check in SC is concision and awkwardness. What you are talking about is concision.

NO OTHER ANSWER CHOICE IS GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT.

you just CAN'T choose a grammatically INCORRECT sentence for an in concise one.

I think its E.

A - Same as original.

B - "like a rise in temperature" doesn't seem correct to me.

C - Same as B, also the way "Because" is used, sentence lacks the flow.

D - There is no mention of "tongue" in the original passage.

E - Seems to flow the best among all others.

I got it wrong initially with "makes" and the explanation by someone made it look obvious now.

so i stand by "D"
