Kap 800 Question

by chaitanya.mehrotra » Sat Aug 06, 2011 4:56 am
In commercial garment construction, one advantage of serging over single needle sewing is that the seam allowance is overcast as the seam is sewn instead of with a separate process requiring deeper seam allowances.

A) instead of with
B) rather than in
C) in contrast with
D) as opposed to
E) instead of

This looks quite easy, because it is short. However, I found that this is confusing. Why is option ~E wrong. Is instead of ONLY used to compare 2 nouns , and since here we are comparing 2 clauses it will not work ?

The correct Answer is B

E, changes the meaning as avoiding the seperate process. Hence eliminated!

Instead of is used for Nouns and rather than is used for Verbs

Also, instead of is used for making choices.....

You are comparing the two ways in which the seam is over cast. You need to make "as the seam is sewn" (a prepositional phrase) parallel to "a separate process". The latter then needs to be a prepositional phrase, hence "in a separate process".

yes you are comparing 2 processes here. its not "because of the separate process" ... its because of what happens in the separate process.

I really don't see a problem with "instead"(choice E). the reason why E is not preferred is because of the change in meaning here.

both "as the seam is sewn" and "in a separate process" need to modify overcast.
