A March 2000 Census

by atulmangal » Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:19 pm
A March 2000 Census Bureau survey showed that Mexico accounted for more than a quarter of all foreign-born residents of the United States, the largest share for any country to contribute since 1890, when about 30 percent of the country's foreign-born population was from Germany.

A. the largest share for any country to contribute
B. the largest share that any country has contributed
C. which makes it the largest share for any country to contribute
D. having the largest share to be contributed by any country
E. having the largest share to have been contributed by any country
Discuss b/w Op A and B
as since is used makes sense to use present perfect.
Since 1980, no country has contributed X apart from Mexico.

also when you look at the meaning of option A it says the largest share for any country to contribute, it means as if there was some stipulated share into which the countries contribute and this had been the largest one. -> this is how i understood the first tiem i read the sentence.

I understand your thought and thats the same thing i thought when i solved this question...also its a tried and tested trick.."since" indicate the use of present perfect and in all the question i solved before this one i find this trick successful...

But the OA given is Op A not Op B, thats why m bit confused and post this question...any idea???

whts the source atul? i gogoled for correst answer and this is wht i found:

https://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/dou ... t8489.html the poster says the answer is B.

apart from tht read ron's comment:
actually, the only acceptable tense for a clause modified by "since..." is the present perfect.

be careful! note that this is for the clause being modified by "since...", NOT for the words following "since".
now wht does the second sentence meah here,"not for words following since"?
confused.

@rohu

source is some trusted question bank and as indicated in the manhattan forum its probably from pinceton reviw...even i googled and found the same thing and nowhere the any expert said that Op B is correct or indicate that Op A is wrong...so m confused and thought would get some help in this forum...about that Ron's post, even i didn't get what that mean...even for the clause followed by SINCE...i apply present perfect and that works...lets see if someone come up with an explanation otherwise will call some expert...

You are correct bro. The answer is B. we need present perfect tense. First let me answer your question regarding Ron's post.

We MOSTLY use present perfect tense with "Since". We use this tense when the clause is question is being modified by since (In the beginning of sentence or at the end). However the next clause need not be using perfect tense....

as you see in this sentence. the second part uses a simple past tense.
when about 30 percent of the country's foreign-born population was from Germany
SECONDLY....

I really feel happy to see everyone helping each other on the forum. But i really feel that faculty is more prompt in Quant. I don't think the forum takes Verbal too seriously. As i said earlier we are all here to learn and can't teach each other everything or beyond a point. The posts need to be checked by Faculty and they need to approve and make corrections.
I really enjoy being here but i would want to request the faculty to be equally responsive for verbal too.
Guys please let me know if i need to send my request to someone special on this forum???

Besides this great going guys!!
