I posted this in the wrong forum before so apologies if you have already seen it.

I intend to apply to NYU part-time MBA program for Fall 2011. However, I noticed on their website that they are still accepting applications for Spring 2011 admission. I confirmed this today with an admissions representative at Stern. I realize that there are probably not too many seats available and the competition to get into those seats will be high (per SB representative in previous post), but is it worth applying anyway? Profile below:

GMAT: 650 (Q44, V35)

GPA: 2.8 from top ten undergraduate business school

Work experience: 5+ years with Global Fortune 500 company (Top 30) in New York developing and managing distribution sales to retail and commercial accoutns.

I want to get my GMAT up to the 680 range and realize my GPA is on the low side for Stern PT, but I can't take the GMAT again for another month as I took it for the first time today. I have not started the application at all. Should I submit an application anyway this late in the game? My thoughts are that an improved GMAT score and a re-application would be looked upon more favorably by the admissions staff then a single application in the fall. Could an admissions consultant please let me know his or her thoughts?

Dear Chamadian,

This is a tough dilemma--I guess my question to you is do you feel you can put together a strong package in the next couple of weeks? Do you have the time to work on your essays and do your recommenders have time to turn your recommendations around? If you feel you can put together a quality application package quickly, then it might be worth applying for spring 2011 if you are ready to start in January. If you were rejected, then you could re-apply for fall 2011 with an improved GMAT and application. I do think you are correct that the number of seats remaining is probably small and so competition at this point could be stiff, but it is hard to know what the applicant pool looks like. So, it comes down to your risk tolerance and your assessment of your ability to pull it together.

Good luck,
Lisa

Lisa,

Thanks for your prompt response. I do think I have time to put everything together and I would be ready to start in January. I have one more question for you:

My Fall '11 application will obviously be stronger if I can improve my GMAT scores, but will it be even stronger if I apply as a re-applicant from Spring '11? In other words, can applying for Spring '11 improve my chances for Fall '11 or is re-application a moot point for the admissions committee?

I know at this stage in the game the odds are against me. I just want to know if its worth it.

Re-application status neither strengthens nor weakens your chances. It simply factors into your evaluation like any other component. They will look for evidence you have improved your candidacy since you last applied and that you have taken the effort to submit a new application, not simply recycled and submitted the exact same set of essays.
