Ovocular ?

by goelmohit2002 » Wed Aug 05, 2009 10:42 am
Hi All,

Can someone please tell ...in the below question how OA is assumption....

Assumption IMO = Additional evidence that MUST be true....

Here why the visit to rare species habitat is necessary ? Why the normal birds cannot be watched by this new device ?

IMO C strengthens the argument....i.e. person may use....but it IMO is not a mandatory thing for conclusion to be valid ?

Even if we negate the C....still conclusion does not breaks...it just weakens a bit....

Please tell what I am missing here ?

OA = C

The assumption here are 2
1. The features demanded by birding enthusiasts are lightweight, compact and extremely durable.
2. The birding enthusiast on his next bird watching excursion will go to see some of the world’s rarest species.

The Choice C is correct because

So, use Avian Oculars on your next bird watching excursion, and see some of the world’s rarest species in all of their beautiful plumage.

and their is no choice for assumption #1.

Thanks. But can you please tell why they have to travel to habitats ? Why this MUST be TRUE ?

Why can't the rare species be seen in the neighborhood ?

Basically what my doubt is that is C strengthening the argument or it MUST be TRUE ?

I don't approach an assumption reasoning with a question MUST BE TRUE ?
or why is an answer choice is strengthening the argument as this is not a strengthening question.

and Yes, the world's rarest species can be seen in the neighborhood...and their location is not important as long as you go there to see em...take our binoculars with you in your next trip !

@goelmohit2002,

Assumption and Must be true are completely different things.

Assumptions can never be stated in the argument. That is why A and D should be ruled out here, because they are stated in the argument.

Must be true are inference questions.

My take:

A: In the features, it says Avian is light weight. But do you think it is relevant to the conclusion in any way?

B. Can't be right. MUST be used.

C - Since the reader ..... bird watching trip, he can use Avian Oculars on his next bird watching excursion, and see some of the world’s rarest species.

D - It says comparable. Not similar. Also, Its not relevant to the conclusion.

E - Not possible as an assumption.

yes assumption is an unstated premise which is needed/must be true for the conclusion.
=>assumption not true- conclusion is weakened (shows assumption must be true for the conclusion to hold).

or the assumption must strengthen the argument. (in some strengthen questions the correct answers are the assumptions)

in an assumption question, the correct answer choice when negated should weaken/undermine the argument. the conclusion may not totally break apart.

Oh OK....thanks a lot !!!

I was of the opinion that conclusion should totally fall apart.....

Thanks for the clarification SD.

assumptions are never explicit(eliminate a/d). they are unstated premises that the conclusion hinges on. assumptions in some cases establish feasibility of argument in that they establish that the premises are ACTUALLY true.

the ad is comparing traditional binoculars, (which are for general use) to avion binoculars, which are for bird watching. In order for the comparison to be feasible we have to assume that the travelers whom the ad is targeting, will be going on bird expeditions. "use Avian Oculars on your next bird watching excursion..." is a dead give away. Again ad is assuming there will ACTUALLY be a next excursion and that it will involve birds.

Answer is C.

Also, some of these negation techniques for assumptions are very tough and sometimes cloud recognition of an assumption more than clarify. Sometimes the best way to tackle them is to keep it simple and think logically.

You got this!

I initially thought the ans was A because it mentioned a part of the premise...for A to be right, I am thinking that it should state that all 3 features hold superior to a traditional binocs (weight, size and durability) rather than just weight...am I right in thinking this?

The other premise as someone already mentioned in the post is that your next trip will involve an encounter with rare birds.

As I understand it, premise is a logical gap between the conclusion and the premise(S). It can also be thought of as an unstated premise.

I narrowed down the answer to C and E. The reason of choosing C is well discussed, but can anybody justify to negate the choice E. I find that advertiser assumes bird watcher bothers about binocular specification and so, advertised tries to convince by mentioning about product specifications such as light-weightiness, durability etc..

please comment.

IMO E is wrong because it is talking about products in general....this is very broad interpretation from the information that is talking only about ovoculars...

Hi Scooby,

I am still not convinced by the OA i.e. C...Can you please help in telling what I am missing here ?

How can we assume that reader(note that anybody can read...including you and me)....will travel to habitat of rare species....

How can we say that reader = Bird enthusiast....

Shouldn't the better wording of C be ?

A Birding enthusiast travel through the habitats of rare species during his or her bird watching trip.

instead of:

The reader will travel through the habitats of rare species during his or her next bird watching trip.

IMO if we make the above changes surely the same turns out to be the key and necessary assumption
