The principal has sought approval for her plan to grant promotions to only those seventh-grade students proficient in reading without meeting with opposition.

(A) reading without meeting with opposition
(B) reading, having met with no opposition
(C) reading, without the opposition of others
(D) reading, and has not met with opposition
(E) reading without opposition

OA : D

A) reading without meeting with opposition - (modifies seventh grade students. It is the teacher who has not met with opposition.)

B)reading, having met with no opposition - (participle phrase and modifies the subject of the sentence. implies that the teacher having met with no opposition. looks like 'no opposition' is some peson and after the teacher met this 'no opposition', she decided to seek approval.)

C)reading, without the opposition of others- (wrongly modifies the seventh grade students.)

D) reading, and has not met with opposition - [perfect! The sentence would read- the teacher has sought approval...and the teacher has not met with opposition. both the clauses are Parallel.]

E) reading without opposition - (again wrongly modifies the seventh grade students.)

The principal has sought approval < for approval to seventh grade students reading without meeting with opposition>

The Flaw: This statement is not concise. Without meeting/ with opposition. Redundant.

correct one should be E ????? . < reading without opposition> . I thought it should be. But it is not
The flaw: Opposition has to do with the Principal and not with the reading. Its nonsensical

So D.

and < principal> has not met< with opposition>

I don't think 'D' is correct as there is a clear violation of comma usage. As per the comma rule - ' Do not use a comma before and to separate two verbs that have the same subject'.

In this Q, who has not met with the opposition, 'Principal' - subject. So, 'D' cannot be the answer.

To me option C looks better. If you read it in part after removing the fragment - 'to grant promotions to only those seventh-grade students proficient in reading', it looks fine,

The principal has sought approval for her plan, without the opposition of others

BTW, what the source of this Q.

You have urself answered the question
WHO HAS NOT MET WITH THE OPPOSITION ?
Answer : Principal

I believe that is what the sentence is all about ;-)

It implies her RULE has not met with any opposition, whatsoever !

hope that helps!

hey mmslf75, I couldn't get u !!

I agree that the intended meaning is probably clear but again its violation of the comma rule,

I will quote few example from MGMAT, ( good for comma usage refn )
Earl walked to school, AND later ate his lunch - Wrong
Earl walked to school AND later ate his lunch - Right
Earl walked to school, AND he later ate his lunch - Right

I think the correct usage should go as below,
The principal has sought approval for her plan to grant promotions to only those seventh-grade students proficient in reading, and she has not met with opposition.

That is why im concerned about the source of this Q.

Pls correct me if wrong.
