In which one of the following choices must p be greater than q?

A) 0.9^p = 0.9^q
B) 0.9^p = 0.9^2q
C) 0.9^p > 0.9^q
D) 9^p < 9^q

In which one of the following choices must p be greater than q?

A) 0.9^p = 0.9^q - The value of (p,q) can be (0,0), (1,1), ... Not the answer as p = q
B) 0.9^p = 0.9^2q - The value of (p,q) can be (0,0), (1,0.5), (3,1.5) ....Not the answer p = q and p > q
C) 0.9^p > 0.9^q - The value of (p,q) can be (2,3), (3,4) ....Not the answer p < q
D) 9^p < 9^q - The value of (p,q) can be (0.5,1), (1,2)....Not the answer p < q
E) 9^p > 9^q - The value of (p,q) can be (1,0.5), (2,1)....p > q

A) 0.9^p = 0.9^q --> p = q
B) 0.9^p = 0.9^2q --> 0.9^p = 0.81^q --> p = 2q
C) 0.9^p > 0.9^q --> p < q
D) 9^p < 9^q --> p < q
E) 9^p > 9^q --> p > q ----> YES

The correct answer is E.

The basic concept this question tests is as follows,
  • 1. For positive x, such that 0 < x < 1, the more the power of x the more small it is.
    2. For positive x, such that x > 1, the more the power of x the more large it is.
