Whenever we see a pronoun in the underlined part of the sentence, there's an excellent chance that we're being tested on pronoun usage. We see "they" in the original, we need to find a matching antecedent (parent noun).
Clearly, "they" is referring to the army. However, an army is singular, not plural, so "they" is incorrect. Quickly eliminate (a), (b), (c) and (d) ("their" is equally wrong).
Only one choice left: choose (e).
