hm E is good in its comparison.

A. Unlike most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warbler are very difficult to tell apart. -wrong comparison between "most warbler" and "male and female". so A is out
B. Unlike most warbler species, the gender of the blue-winged warbler is very difficult to distinguish.-same here
and so on with C and D
E. Blue-winged warblers are unlike most species of warbler in that it is very difficult to tell the male and female apart. -good one

There is a comparision issue in both option A and option B. In A -- we cannot compare male and female warblers to other species. IN B - we cannot compare Genders to other species.

In C- same, comparision issues.

D -- pretty awkward sentece.

Option E should be the answer. Blue Winged warblers [ a species of warblers -- compared to -- other species of warblers

I do not know why you guyzz are saying that option C is having comparison issues.

Option C has a proper comparison usage.

'Unlike those in most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged arblers are very difficult to distinguish.' Here the pronoun 'those' represents the male and female in warbler species.

In option E there is ambigious 'that' and 'it' as the pronoun.

it is not having a clear referent and same goes for 'that'.

Even you take 'in that' as a thing to compare, still 'it' is not having a clear referent.

I think the answer is C. Mankey please type what is the OA.....

@Amit: "Those" refers to what??
male,female,girls,boys,children??
It is your assumption that "those" refers to only male and female.

The answer should be C.We need to compare blue warblers with another species of warblers(red, orange, etc., warblers).
IMO "Those" in C is correct
"Those" refers to all these red, orange, etc., warblers

The answer is E.
A and B have comparison errors.

C distorts the intended meaning of the statement. It may be understood as it is difficult to distinguish the male and the female, in a group, from other groups of males and females.

D. is clearly incorrect.

E. is correct. The use of 'in that' is appropriate for the following clause is meant to explain the one before 'in that'.
E.G., This culture is different in that it fuses collectivism into individualism. As you can see, the independent clause after 'in that' attempts to give clarification to the one before 'in that'.

Plus, the phrase, 'to tell the male and the female apart' is a perfect alternative to 'to distinguish the male from the female'.
