SC strategy during the exam

by arindamcanada » Sat Apr 03, 2010 4:31 pm
Hi,

Looking for some advice on the SC strategy during the test. Practice with OG 11 and 12 and even with SC practise on the GMAT Prep gives me a 80-90% hit ratio. However, on the exam its hitting 50%. Dont know why. Maybe its the timing factor or maybe I have a strategy problem? If anyone has some good advice please do share. Thanks in advance.

How good are you in Grammar? I believe that one must be familiar with a little bit of grammar (if not intensively). Learning just GMAT errors and practicing OG's will not help you. As SC is the most important section in verbal (you get majority of questions), it's better if you're familiar with both the grammar and the GMAT-style questions or strategies.

And from which book did you learn the strategies? I highly recommend MGMAT SC guide 4th edition for strategies. For grammar, you need to search for a good appropriate book. In my prep, i used Wren & Martin.

I do not have a problem with the Grammar in general - I have grown up reading Wren and Martin (hated it back in grade 4) and English is unofficially my first language. I have also used Manhattan SC - gone over it, however I am going over it again this weekend. Dont really have a problem - even when I make a mistake I am very quick to find my errors or find the correct answer. Something with the strategy is messing up. When I have my time (while doing the OG's), I get nearly 90% right. Maybe time is an issue here.

Probably, you are too worried with the timer. To go through the guide for strategies is a good idea. I would also suggest you to read Ron's posts in BTG forum or MGMAT forum. At one point of time, i went over his posts very diligently and took important points in flashcards. Now i'm very comfortable with SC. This is a very unorthodox way of preparation but believe me it's very helpful.
