SC: Idiom - "According to a 1996..."

Below is a question from an official practice exam where choice D is correct.

Is this an issue of Idiom? "More than three times as many...as...."

According to a 1996 survey by the National Association of College and University Business Officers, more than three times as many independent institutions of higher education charge tuition and fees of under $8,000 a year than those that charge over $16,000.

A/ than those that charge

B/ than are charging

C/ than to charge

D/ as charge

E/ as those charging

Hi melanie.espeland,

Yes, the correct answer is based on a specific 2-part phrase. The GMAT tests parallelism in a number of different ways, so you're likely to see at least a couple of 2-part phrases on Test Day. Here, the 2-part phrase is "as many......as....."(although variations will "swap out" the word "many" with another word). This helps to eliminate answers A, B and C.

You still have to maintain parallelism in the correct answer - since the first part of the phrase uses the phrase "three times as many....institutions...charge....", the second part of the phrase must use the same verbiage (the verb "charge").

Final Answer: D
