E should be the answer.

A. Incorrect comparison. Salaries cannot lag behind other professionals.

B. Same error as A.

C. less is not required after $24000 as its already mentioned that salaries continue to lag behind. Less introduces redundancy here. Also, the sentence formation is awkward.

D. Less is not required.

E. Perfect. Makes the correct comparison and does not include any unnecessary words.

Less is not required because the sentence already mentions that the salaries "lag behind" those of other professionals.

Lag behind indicates that teachers' salaries are less. Therefore having less in the sentence introduces unnecessary redundancy.

For e.g. which one would be the correct sentence from the 2 below?

1. My salary continues to lag behind yours by $2000 less.

2. My salary continues to lag behind yours by $2000.
